Red Sparrow (2018)

Red Sparrow (2018) is an American spy thriller directed by Francis Lawrence and written by Justin Haythe, based on the 2013 novel of the same name by Jason Matthews. In modern-day Russia, Dominika Egorova is a renowned ballerina who cares for her sick mother. After sustaining a career-ending injury, she is approached by her uncle Ivan, the deputy director of the SVR. Ivan tasks her with seducing Russian gangster Dimitry Ustinov to secure her mother’s ongoing medical treatment. During this mission, Ustinov is killed by Sergei Matorin, an SVR operative acting under Ivan’s orders. Given the circumstances, Ivan offers Dominika two options: join the SVR or face execution for witnessing Ustinov’s murder. Meanwhile, CIA operative Nate Nash operates in Moscow and arranges a meeting with his contact code-named Marble in Gorky Park. However, their encounter is disrupted by local authorities and Nash devises a distraction to allow Marble to escape unnoticed.
As Nash cannot risk returning to Russia, he is reassigned to Budapest to reestablish contact with Marble – a plan that also catches the attention of the SVR. After being selected for State School 4, a notorious institution where “Sparrows” are trained to use seduction as a tool for espionage, Dominika excels in her training despite clashes with her trainer, known only as the Matron. Despite the Matron’s objections, Ivan and General Vladimir Korchnoi, both high-ranking officials under Ivan’s command, decide Dominika is ready for her first assignment in Budapest: to gain the trust of Nash and expose Marble’s identity. While in Budapest, she shares a living space with another “sparrow” named Marta and is overseen by station chief Maxim Volontov. Once in contact with Nash, he quickly identifies her as a Russian intelligence operative and attempts to persuade her to defect.
