Red State (2011)
The American independent film Red State (2011), written and directed by Kevin Smith, follows teenagers Travis, Jarod, and Billy Ray on their way to meet a woman named Sarah. While driving, they accidentally hit Sheriff Wynan’s parked car as Wynan is engaging in sexual activity with another man. Upon returning to the station, Wynan instructs his deputy Pete to search for the vehicle involved. Meanwhile, Sarah deceives the boys into drinking drugged beer, causing them to pass out. When Jarod wakes up, he finds himself in a covered cage inside Five Points Trinity Church – a fervently conservative church led by Abin Cooper (Sarah’s father). Cooper launches into a venomous sermon and his followers brutally murder a captive gay man before dropping him down a crawl space where Travis and Billy Ray are tied up together. As Cooper prepares to do the same to Jarod, he suddenly halts upon spotting Pete’s arrival at the church.
Travis and Billy Ray manage to free themselves, but are overheard by Sarah’s husband, Caleb. While Billy Ray successfully escapes his binds, Travis is left behind. As Caleb gives chase, Billy Ray runs into a room filled with weapons, resulting in a shootout between the two. The sound of gunshots captures Pete’s attention and he reaches out to Wynan for backup, but before he can receive any assistance, Cooper’s son Mordechai fatally shoots him. Cooper then uses this as leverage to blackmail Wynan into staying away or face the consequences of his homosexuality being exposed to his wife. In panic, Wynan contacts Agent Joseph Keenan from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives who promptly begins setting up outside the church.
