Redacted (2007)
Redacted (2007) is an American war film written and directed by Brian De Palma. It is a fictional dramatization, loosely based on real events that occurred in Mahmoudiyah, Iraq in 2006. Private First Class Angel Salazar, an ambitious young soldier serving in the U.S. Army during the Iraq War, hopes to use his military experience to gain admi’ Carolina near Samarra, Iraq, Salazar documents his deployment through his camcorder for an amateur documentary called Tell Me No Lies. Meanwhile, a French documentary crew embedded with Salazar’s platoon is also filming their own project titled Barrage.
The French documentary team captures footage of soldiers performing their daily tasks at a random checkpoint in Iraq as part of their deployment, aimed at reducing insurgent activity. These duties include searching vehicles passing through the checkpoint. During one such day, the film crew witnesses an incident where Private First Class Reno Flake fires his Humvee-mounted M2 machine gun at a speeding car attempting to pass through the checkpoint. Sadly, a pregnant woman in the car is shot and is immediately taken to the hospital by her brother, who was driving. Tragically, she passes away later on. It is later discovered that the driver was simply trying to get his sister to the hospital for delivery and misunderstood the soldiers’ instructions, believing they had given him clearance to proceed.
