Reindeer Games (2000)
Reindeer Games (2000) is an American action thriller directed by John Frankenheimer in his final feature directorial outing before his passing in 2002. In a prison near Iron Mountain, Michigan, cellmates Nick Cassidy and Rudy Duncan are just two days away from their release. Nick has been corresponding with a woman named Ashley Mercer, whom he plans to meet once he is free. On the other hand, Rudy wants to reunite with his family in Sidnaw for Christmas. A fight breaks out in the prison, resulting in Nick’s supposed death while protecting Rudy. After being released, Rudy poses as Nick and meets Ashley. They go to a diner and later have intercourse at a cabin. However, their night takes a dangerous turn when they are kidnapped by Gabriel, Ashley’s brother and leader of a gang that includes Pug, Merlin, and Jumpy.
It turns out that this gang is planning to rob a casino where Nick used to work before going to prison. Despite protesting that he is not Nick, Rudy soon learns that Ashley wrote to him with the knowledge that Gabriel would use him for the heist. Fearing for his life if the truth about his lack of knowledge regarding the casino is discovered, Rudy continues with his charade. Drawing inspiration from Nick’s tales of his time in jail, Rudy comes up with a robbery scheme and informs Gabriel that the biggest heist can be found in the ‘PowWow safe’ located in manager Jack Bangs’s office. When Gabriel asks for a layout of the casino, Rudy claims that it has been renovated. Disguised as a cowboy, Rudy sneaks around the casino to assess any modifications but narrowly avoids being caught by Jack Bangs by swapping clothes with a college student.
