Rescue Dawn (2006)
Rescue Dawn (2006), an epic war drama film written and directed by Werner Herzog, is based on an adapted screenplay from his 1997 documentary Little Dieter Needs to Fly. In February 1966, Lt. Dieter Dengler, a German-born U.S. Navy pilot in squadron VA-145 on the USS Ranger, is shot down over Laos while on a combat mission. Despite surviving the crash, he is captured by the Pathet Lao and taken to a prisoner of war camp. There, he meets other prisoners such as American pilots Gene DeBruin and Duane W. Martin, Hong Kong Chinese radio operator Y.C. To, Procet and Thai Air America freight employee Pisidhi Indradat – all of whom have been held captive for years. The province governor offers Dengler leniency in exchange for signing a document condemning America, but he adamantly refuses despite being tortured by his captors.
Immediately after Dengler’s proposal to escape, the others reluctantly give their approval. The entire group is struggling with malnutrition, unsanitary living conditions, and mistreatment at the hands of their captors. As time passes, the already scarce food supply dwindles even further. To make matters worse, they discover that the desperate guards are plotting to kill them and return home. In response, the prisoners put their carefully crafted plan into action – breaking through a weak spot in the perimeter fence and splitting into two groups, moving in opposite directions around the fence until they converge on the guard hut during lunchtime. Their ultimate goal: overpowering the guards and reaching out to American forces for rescue. However, due to a disobedient faction within the group, Dengler’s plan goes awry and results in most of the guards being shot.
