Rescued by Ruby (2022)
Rescued by Ruby (2022), an American biographical drama film directed by Katt Shea, tells the true story of Dan O’Neil, a state trooper determined to join the K-9 search and rescue team. Despite multiple rejections, Dan refuses to give up on his dream, and finds hope in an energetic shelter dog named Ruby. This half-border collie has been adopted seven times in the past six months due to her hyperactivity, but always returned due to being untrainable. As Dan approaches his 30th birthday, his one last chance to qualify for the team draws near.
After learning that the K-9 unit lacks funds to acquire more German Shepherds, typically used in search and rescue teams, Daniel realizes he cannot join the program. However, when he finds out his wife Melissa is expecting their second child, he becomes even more determined as the promotion would bring better pay and benefits. Meanwhile, Pat, an advocate at the shelter, pleads with her colleague Rick to give Ruby more time before putting her down that evening. It is then revealed to Dan that a K-9 dog need not be a German Shepherd but can possess qualities like curiosity, agility, and spirit. He decides to visit the shelter where Pat persuades him to adopt Ruby and train her for the program. The story then follows Dan’s journey of training Ruby, facing both challenges and triumphs. Both Dan and Ruby are full of energy and passion but must learn how to work together efficiently.
