Revolutionary Road (2008)
Revolutionary Road (2008) is a romantic drama film directed by Sam Mendes and written by Justin Haythe. It is based on the 1961 novel of the same name by Richard Yates. The story follows longshoreman Frank Wheeler, who meets a woman named April at a party in 1948. Their aspirations differ – Frank dreams of being a cashier, while April longs to become an actress. After securing a sales position with Knox Machines, Frank and April get married and move to 115 Revolutionary Road in suburban Connecticut, as they await the arrival of their child. The couple forms close friendships with their realtor Helen Givings and her husband Howard, as well as their neighbor Milly Campbell and her husband Shep. Despite presenting themselves as the perfect couple to their friends, behind closed doors, their relationship is troubled. April struggles to find success in acting, while Frank grows increasingly dissatisfied with his monotonous job.
On his 30th birthday, he takes a young secretary from work out for drinks at a bar, where she becomes heavily intoxicated and they end up sleeping together. Helen has asked April if they would be interested in meeting her son, John, who had previously been in an insane asylum. She believes that the younger couple could provide some assistance to him in managing his condition. After much consideration, April agrees. It seems like a perfect opportunity for a change of scenery and an opportunity to help support the family while Frank searches for his calling. She proposes they relocate to Paris for a fresh start away from the ‘hopeless emptiness’ of their current lifestyle. Although Frank initially hesitates, he eventually becomes convinced. In the following weeks, the Wheelers reveal their plans to live in Paris to their friends, but surprisingly, it is only John who truly seems to understand and support their decision.
