Revolver (2005), an action thriller film co-written and directed by Guy Ritchie, has two different versions. The following plot synopsis pertains to Ritchie’s preferred Directors Cut. Set in an unnamed city, the story follows Jake Green, a cockney gangster and gambler who is released from a seven-year solitary confinement sentence for an unspecified crime. During his time in prison, Jake developed claustrophobia, causing him to feel great distress in confined spaces and elevators. Two years later, Jake and his brother Billy visit Dorothy Macha’s casino. As a gang boss involved in illegal gambling throughout the city, Macha was responsible for Jake’s imprisonment. Despite Billy’s reluctance, the brothers have come to collect what they believe Macha owes them. Sent up to a private area of the casino where a high-stakes game is taking place, Jake plays against one of the players and loses after betting a fortune on a chip toss.

By manipulating Macha and luring him into a false sense of security, he convinces him to make the same bet. This time, luck is on his side and he emerges as the victor. In a fit of humiliation, Macha orders his trusted associate Paul to have Jake killed. As Jake and his brothers leave the casino, a stranger hands him a card and offers to assist him. Despite his fear, Jake chooses to take the stairs instead of the elevator. However, upon looking at the card, he collapses and tumbles down the stairs. He is quickly rushed to the hospital where doctors are baffled by his sudden fainting spell. The results will not be available for a few days. Upon returning home without Billy, Jake is greeted by Sorter, Macha’s hired killer who has been waiting for him all along.
