Rich Kids (1979), an American comedy-drama film directed by Robert M. Young, follows the story of two 12-year-old best friends from the Upper West Side. Franny and Jamie are both precocious youths who bond over their shared experiences with their parents’ divorces. As the new kid in town, Jamie offers guidance to Franny as she deals with her own family’s separation. Franny has been silently observing her father’s late night escapades and attempts to keep them hidden from her mother and herself. Feeling low, she finds solace in Jamie, who also comes from a broken family.

He enlightens her on the perks of being a ‘child of divorce’ and his convincing words start to sway his own beliefs. Franny’s sleepover with Jamie sparks their shared curiosity. However, when Franny’s mother discovers a book in her room and learns of her deception, chaos ensues as multiple couples rush to the sleepover location. Through it all, Jamie and Franny come to understand that they can support each other through the difficulties of their parents’ divorces, even exploring the possibility of something more than friendship.
