Richard III (1995)
Richard III (1995), a British Technicolor film based on William Shakespeare’s play of the same name, depicts King Edward IV’s ascension to the throne with the aid of his brother, Richard, Duke of Gloucester. Following Edward’s coronation in the Great Hall, where his siblings George and Richard bear witness, he departs alongside his wife and children. Meanwhile, Richard gazes upon the throne with contemplation before turning towards the audience and delivering a speech detailing his physical deformities – a hunched back and withered arm. He confesses to harboring envy towards his brother’s newfound power while he remains in a lowly position. In order to fulfill his ambitions, Richard sets out to frame his other brother, George, Duke of Clarence, for plotting against the King and have him incarcerated in the Tower of London. This will be accomplished by alleging that George intends to murder Edward’s heirs.
After offering his assistance to his brother, Richard carries out his deceitful plans, using a warrant to manipulate the King. He enlists the help of two criminals, Michael Gough and Michael Ripper, to carry out the tragic murder of George by drowning him in a butt of wine. Despite Edward’s attempts to pardon Richard, he interferes and prevents it from reaching him. Richard then turns his attention towards seducing Lady Anne, despite her hatred for him due to her husband and father’s deaths. She ultimately succumbs to his charm and marries him. In order to further sow chaos in the court, Richard stirs up animosity between various factions and turns them against Queen Elizabeth. When the exhausted King hears about George’s death, he appoints Richard as Lord Protector before passing away shortly after.
