Richard Jewell (2019)
Richard Jewell (2019), an American biographical drama film directed and produced by Clint Eastwood and written by Billy Ray, follows the story of Richard Jewell. In 1986, he starts off as an office supply clerk at the Small Business Administration where he forms a friendship with attorney Watson Bryant. Eventually, he leaves to pursue a career in law enforcement. Although he briefly works as a sheriff’s deputy, he ultimately gets discharged. In early 1996, Jewell takes on a security guard position at Piedmont College but is terminated due to multiple complaints of overstepping his authority. He then moves in with his mother Bobi in Atlanta. During the summer of 1996, Jewell is hired as a security guard for the Olympic Games and assigned to monitor Centennial Park. One night while managing the crowds during a concert, Jewell discovers a suspicious package under a bench. After an explosives expert confirms it as a bomb, the events that follow will change his life forever.
The security team, law enforcement officers, FBI agent Tom Shaw, and Jewell’s friend Dave Dutchess work together to evacuate concert-goers from the bomb’s vicinity before it explodes. Jewell is hailed as a hero for his actions. Upon receiving a report from the dean of Piedmont College expressing concerns and suspicions about Jewell, Shaw and his team investigate. They find that Jewell fits the typical profile of individuals who commit such crimes: white males with aspirations to become police officers. Similar cases involve people seeking recognition by creating dangerous situations and then rescuing others from them. While discussing this case with journalist Kathy Scruggs of the Atlanta-Journal Constitution, Shaw discloses that Jewell is currently under FBI scrutiny.
