Rick and Morty (2013–2024) is an American adult animated science fiction sitcom produced by Justin Roiland and Dan Harmon for Adult Swim, Cartoon Network’s late-night programming block. The series follows the mishaps of the Smith family, including parents Jerry and Beth, their children Summer and Morty, and Beth’s father, Rick Sanchez, who resides with them as a visitor. The creators have stated that the family resides in a location near Seattle, Washington. However, throughout the show’s episodes, Rick and Morty explore endless alternate realities by means of portals and Rick’s flying vehicle.
Rick is an unconventional and alcoholic scientist who rejects many social norms like education, matrimony, affection, and family life. He frequently embarks on escapades with his 14-year-old grandson, Morty, a tender-hearted but easily agitated young boy whose moral compass offers a contrast to Rick’s egotistical nature. Morty’s older sister, Summer, is a more traditional teenager who worries about her status among peers and occasionally joins Rick and Morty on their exploits. The kids’ mother, Beth, is usually composed and assertive in the household but struggles with her identity as a horse surgeon. She is unhappily married to Jerry, a simple-minded and insecure individual who disapproves of Rick’s influence on their family.
