Ricochet (1991), an action crime thriller directed by Russell Mulcahy, follows the story of Nick Styles. Nick, a rookie police officer and law student in Los Angeles, meets Alice and falls out of touch with his childhood friend Odessa, who has turned to drug dealing in South Central. While patrolling a carnival, Nick and his partner Larry Doyle come across hitman Earl Talbot Blake and his accomplice Kim. A tense standoff ensues when Blake takes a hostage after killing drug dealers. Stripping off his equipment and uniform, Nick relies on a hidden gun in his athletic supporter to shoot Blake in the knee and ultimately detain him. The heroic act is captured on camera by an amateur videographer and gains widespread attention through television coverage. As a result, both Nick and Doyle are promoted to Detective, while Blake and Kim are sentenced to prison.
Eight years later, Styles has become an Assistant District Attorney and is married to Alice with two daughters. Meanwhile, behind bars, Blake allies himself with the Aryan Brotherhood to plot a violent and deadly prison escape, seeking revenge against Styles. Despite being paroled, Kim continues to assist Blake in his endeavors. The escape during a parole hearing only leaves Blake and the AB leader alive. In a final act of violence, Blake kills the AB gang leader and burns his body. However, while serving his sentence, he had switched their dental records, ensuring that authorities would believe he perished in the fire. As for Styles, he locates Odessa who has become a major drug dealer in the neighborhood. He pleads with him to stop dealing drugs to children.
