Mick Garris wrote, co-produced, and directed Riding the Bullet (2004), a horror film based on Stephen King’s 2000 novella with the same title. The story takes place in 1969 and follows young artist Alan Parker who is studying at the University of Maine. His professor believes Alan has an unhealthy fascination with death. On his birthday, October 30, Alan worries that his girlfriend Jessica is planning to end their relationship. Later, while getting high in his bathtub, Alan accidentally cuts himself when Jessica and some friends surprise him at home for his birthday celebration.

After waking up in the hospital, Alan is met by Jessica who expresses her anger towards him for his ‘selfish’ actions. However, she also reassures him of her love and surprises him with tickets to a concert featuring John Lennon in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. The next day, when Alan is discharged from the hospital, Jessica points out that he has built a wall around himself. It suddenly dawns on Alan that Jessica was serious about leaving him. As he receives a call informing him of his mother Jean’s stroke, Alan decides to return home to Lewiston, Maine that evening and gives the concert tickets to his roommates. While hitchhiking back home, memories of his father Julian’s funeral from when he was 6 years old flood back to Alan.
