The comedy film, Rifkin’s Festival (2020), is the work of writer and director Woody Allen as an American-Spanish-Italian collaboration. Mort Rifkin, a snobby elderly film critic from New York, confides in his therapist about recent events in his life. He reluctantly accompanies his much younger wife Sue to a film festival in San Sebastián. She works for Philippe, a French director whose ordinary and unoriginal anti-war movie is being hailed as a masterpiece by all but Mort. As Sue and Philippe’s relationship turns flirtatious, Mort becomes increasingly envious. His unsettling thoughts and fears are manifested in nightmares inspired by renowned black and white films such as Citizen Kane, Breathless, Jules and Jim, A Man and a Woman, Persona, Wild Strawberries, The Exterminating Angel, and 8½.

While at the festival, Mort ponders his past and his ambitious yet unfulfilled novel, reflecting on his days as a film professor which brought him joy and inspiration. Meanwhile, he struggles to prevent Sue and Philippe from being together. Seeking medical help for chest pains, he meets Joanna “Jo” Rojas, a Spanish doctor who had lived in New York and is currently in an unhappy marriage with a volatile artist. Mort is captivated by Jo and resorts to feigning health problems in hopes of gaining her attention. Eventually, the two embark on a scenic drive through the countryside, thoroughly enjoying each other’s company.
