Risen (2016)
Risen (2016), a biblical drama film directed and written by Kevin Reynolds and Paul Aiello respectively, tells the story of Clavius, a Roman Tribune from Legio X Fretensis. In charge of overseeing the crucifixion of Yeshua (Jesus), Clavius orders his men to guard the body after his death. However, the body mysteriously disappears and the soldiers accuse Yeshua’s followers of stealing it in order to fabricate his resurrection. To prevent an uprising in Jerusalem before the Emperor’s arrival, Pontius Pilate tasks Clavius with finding the missing body. Together with his aide Lucius, they question individuals who claim to have seen Yeshua alive after the resurrection. As they follow various leads, they are met with increasingly unbelievable and seemingly miraculous accounts from people like Mary Magdalene and Bartholomew. These followers often speak in riddles and refuse to reveal any information about others involved.
As Clavius delves deeper into his investigation, it begins to cause unease among both Romans and Hebrews. Pilate, feeling pressure from all sides and fearing repercussions from Caesar, grows more distant and unsupportive. As he runs out of leads, Clavius decides to revisit a disgraced Roman soldier who was tasked with guarding Yeshua’s tomb. Despite the soldier now being a drunkard, Clavius aggressively questions him and the man finally breaks free from the lie he had previously maintained. The soldier then tells an unbelievable tale – on the morning Yeshua disappeared, there was a blinding flash that caused the stone and ropes sealing the tomb to disintegrate. He also claims to have seen a figure accompanied by a thunderous voice that left him and another soldier terrified. However, Clavius remains skeptical.
