Rising Sun (1993)
Rising Sun (1993), an American buddy cop crime thriller directed by Philip Kaufman, takes place at the newly opened Los Angeles headquarters of Nakamoto, a Japanese keiretsu. At a commencement gala, call girl Cheryl Lynn Austin is discovered dead after an apparent violent sexual encounter. LAPD Lieutenant Webster ‘Web’ Smith and John Connor, a former police captain with expertise in Japanese affairs, are tasked with acting as liaisons between the Japanese executives and the investigating officer – Smith’s former partner Tom Graham. As they begin their investigation, Connor and Smith review surveillance camera footage and discover that one of the discs is missing. The duo suspects Eddie Sakamura, Cheryl’s boyfriend and an agent of a rival Nakamoto company, of being responsible for her death. To confirm their suspicions, they question Sakamura during a house party.
Sakamura pledges to bring something to Connor, who reluctantly allows him to leave after seizing his passport. Ishihara, a Nakamoto employee previously questioned by Connor, delivers the missing disc which clearly depicts Sakamura’s murder of Cheryl. Graham and Smith lead a SWAT team in a raid on Sakamura’s residence. Despite attempting to escape in a Vector W8 sports car, he crashes and perishes. In light of new information, Smith discovers that Sakamura had tried to reach him regarding the missing disc. Together with Connor, they seek the assistance of an expert named Jingo Asakuma. Asakuma reveals that the disc has been tampered with digitally in order to implicate Sakamura. Meanwhile, Nakamoto is currently engaged in delicate negotiations for the purchase of an American semiconductor company.
