River's Edge (1986)
River’s Edge (1986), an American crime drama film directed by Tim Hunter and written by Neal Jimenez, is set in Northern California. One day, pre-teen Tim tosses his sister’s doll into a nearby river and spots a teenager named John smoking on the other side. Later, at a convenience store, Tim sees John getting denied the sale of beer and decides to steal two cans for himself. When John leaves the store and heads towards his car, he discovers that Tim has placed the stolen beer on his front seat. Taking advantage of their encounter, Tim joins John on a trip to buy marijuana before returning home. Meanwhile, Matt (Tim’s older brother) and their mother are frantically searching for the lost doll. Matt’s friend Layne shows up and they both head out to meet Feck-a troubled ex-biker and drug dealer-for more drugs.
During the journey, Layne shares stories from a party that had taken place the previous night where John and Jamie were having an argument. At school, Layne and Matt hang out with their friends Clarissa, Maggie, and Tony. They chat and smoke as usual. Matt mentions his desire to escape to Portland, but Clarissa brushes it off. Suddenly, John shows up and admits to killing Jamie. The girls think he’s just kidding around and head off to class. However, John convinces Layne and Matt to come see Jamie’s dead body. While Matt is disturbed by the sight, Layne is more focused on covering up the murder. Eventually, they all go to see the body in Mike’s truck. Later on, Clarissa calls Matt but he doesn’t really feel like talking to her right now. Meanwhile, Layne takes matters into his own hands and disposes of Jamie’s corpse in the river.
