Road to Perdition (2002) is an American crime drama film directed by Sam Mendes and written by David Self. It is based on the first volume of the graphic novel series, also titled Road to Perdition, by Max Allan Collins and Richard Piers Rayner. The story takes place in 1931 during the Great Depression. The main character, Michael Sullivan Sr., was taken in and raised by Irish Mob leader John Rooney in Rock Island, Illinois. Despite being feared as an enforcer for Rooney, Sullivan’s own children are unaware of his true profession. Rooney has grown to love Sullivan more than his own impulsive son Connor. At a wake for his brother, Finn McGovern hints that Rooney may be responsible for the death. In response, Rooney sends Connor and Sullivan to confront McGovern. Unbeknownst to them, Sullivan’s eldest son Michael Jr., who had been hiding in the back of their car, witnesses the confrontation through a hole in the wall.

McGovern denies any involvement in stealing from the mob and insinuates that it was actually Connor who committed the theft. Connor guns down McGovern, forcing Sullivan to defend himself by shooting the other armed witnesses. Afterwards, Sullivan finds out that Michael witnessed the incident and makes him promise not to tell anyone. Rooney orders Sullivan to collect a debt from Tony Calvino. To cover his paranoia and envy, Connor sneaks in a message for Calvino with Sullivan. Upon reading it, Calvino reaches for his gun but ends up being killed along with his bodyguard by Sullivan. The note instructs: ‘Eliminate Sullivan and all debts will be settled’. In a panic, Sullivan rushes back home only to discover that Connor has already murdered his wife Annie and their younger son Peter. Luckily, Michael was spared as he came back home late from detention.
