Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves (1991) is an American action adventure film based on the timeless English folk tale from the 12th century. The film’s director, Kevin Reynolds, sets the story in 1194, where we meet our protagonist Robin of Locksley, a nobleman who had been imprisoned in Jerusalem for years after following King Richard on the Third Crusade. Along with his companion Peter Dubois, they manage to escape with the help of a fellow prisoner named Azeem, whom they save from mortal danger. Before passing away from his injuries, Peter makes Robin promise to protect his sister Marian. With Azeem by his side (due to a life-debt owed), Robin returns to England.

However, upon arrival he learns that the cruel Sheriff of Nottingham has taken over during King Richard’s absence and even killed Robin’s father for remaining loyal to the king. In addition to seeking justice for his father’s death, Robin also saves a young boy from the hands of the Sheriff’s cousin Guy of Gisbourne. Upon arriving at his home, he discovers that his father had been accused and falsely executed for practicing devil worship by Gisbourne. The Sheriff seeks advice from the witch Mortianna, who predicts King Richard’s return and danger for Robin and Azeem. Robin informs Marian of her brother’s passing, but she does not believe she needs his protection. While escaping from the Sheriff’s men in Sherwood Forest, Robin, Duncan, and Azeem encounter a band of outlaws led by Little John.
