Director José Padilha brought the American science-fiction action film, RoboCop (2014), to life with screenwriters Joshua Zetumer, Edward Neumeier, and Michael Miner. This remake of the 1987 original is the fourth in the franchise. The story explores a futuristic world where multinational corporation OmniCorp introduces robotic peacekeepers to maintain law and order. CEO Raymond Sellars leads the company’s efforts to market this advanced technology to domestic law enforcement. However, the Dreyfus Act prohibits the use of militarized drones within the United States. Knowing that most Americans oppose such military presence in their communities, Sellars turns to Dr. Dennett Norton and his research team for an alternative solution. Their proposal: a cyborg police officer. However, Norton reveals that only certain actions can be controlled by human consciousness.
After suffering severe injuries in a car bombing orchestrated by crime boss Antoine Vallon, Detroit detective Alex Murphy is chosen for a groundbreaking procedure by Dr. Norton. Despite initial resistance from his wife Clara, Norton persuades her to give her consent. When Murphy wakes up and realizes he has been drastically transformed, he becomes frustrated and attempts to escape. However, Norton quickly shuts him down and takes him back to the lab. As Norton explains, only parts of Murphy’s head and vital organs remain human. He reminds Murphy of his family’s support and convinces him to keep fighting for them. During training with Rick Mattox, it becomes clear that Murphy cannot match the efficiency of OmniCorp drones.
