Rocketman (2019) is a jukebox musical film, based on the life and achievements of British musician Elton John. Dressed extravagantly as the devil, Elton John appears at a rehab session, reminiscing about his life through flashbacks (The Bitch Is Back). In the 1950s, young Reginald Dwight grows up under the care of his unaffectionate mother Sheila and his grandmother Ivy, who is more loving. Music becomes Reginald’s passion and he dreams of performing for his father Stanley, who shows no interest in him (I Want Love). After starting piano lessons, Reginald makes his way into the prestigious Royal Academy of Music. However, when Sheila has an affair and Stanley abandons them, Sheila’s lover Fred moves in with the family and introduces Reginald to rock music. He becomes infatuated with rock musicians and begins playing gigs at local pubs (Saturday Night’s Alright for Fighting). As an adult, Reginald joins Bluesology and they are hired to accompany American bands The Isley Brothers and Patti LaBelle and the Blue Belles on tour (Breaking Down the Walls of Heartache).

After being advised by Ronald Isley to leave his old life behind and pursue a career in music, Reginald decides to change his name to Elton John. He takes inspiration from saxophonist Elton Dean and adds ‘John’ in honor of John Lennon. Under the guidance of manager Ray Williams, Elton signs with DJM Records, hoping for success. It is through Williams that he meets lyricist Bernie Taupin and they move in together to write songs like ‘Border Song”. However, when Elton reveals his homosexuality, he ends things with their landlady and they are forced to find a new place. They end up living with Elton’s grandmother, mother, and Fred, where they continue creating music and eventually come up with Your Song. With the help of Dick James, they secure a performance at the Troubadour in Los Angeles.
