Rocky (1976), anAmerican sports drama film directed by John G. Avildsen and written by and starring Sylvester Stallone, depicts the story of heavyweight boxing world champion, Apollo Creed. As the United States Bicentennial approaches, Creed plans to hold a title bout in Philadelphia. However, just five weeks before the fight, he receives news that his scheduled opponent is unable to compete due to an injured hand. Despite efforts to find another replacement, all potential candidates are either unavailable or unable to prepare in time. In a bold move, Creed decides to give a local contender a chance at glory. This contender is none other than Rocky Balboa, an Italian-American southpaw boxer known as ‘The Italian Stallion’. With his gritty background as a collector for a Mafia loan shark and his recent win at a Philadelphia fight club, Rocky proves himself as a worthy opponent for Creed.
Upon learning that he has been selected to fight Apollo Creed for the World Heavyweight Championship, Rocky meets with promoter George Jergens. Despite initial reluctance, Rocky agrees to the fight, enticed by the $150,000 payout. He embarks on a unique training regimen, using sides of beef as punching bags. Later, Mickey Goldmill approaches Rocky at the gym about additional training. Initially hesitant due to Mickey’s lack of past interest in him as a fighter, Rocky eventually accepts the offer. As he trains and prepares for the fight, Rocky also begins a relationship with shy pet store employee Adrian Pennino. With the help of Paulie – Adrian’s brother and Rocky’s closest friend – Rocky secures a date with Adrian and turns down his offer to be his cornerman for the upcoming fight.
