The sports drama film, Rocky II (1979), was written and directed by Sylvester Stallone, who also starred in the movie. On New Year’s Day of 1976, world heavyweight boxing champion Apollo Creed had defended his title against Rocky Balboa in a split decision. Both men were taken to the same hospital where, despite their previous agreement, Apollo challenged Rocky once again that night. He wanted to prove that Rocky’s ability to go the distance with him was just a fluke. However, Rocky chose to decline the rematch and retire from professional boxing. His girlfriend, Adrian, supported this decision as did his doctors who informed him that he needed surgery for a detached retina which could potentially lead to permanent blindness. In a private moment between the two fighters, Rocky asked Apollo if he had truly given his all in their fight. Apollo confirmed that he had indeed given his best effort.
After being released from the hospital, Rocky embraces his newfound celebrity status. An agent recognizes Rocky’s potential for lucrative endorsements and sponsorships, and his sudden wealth inspires him to propose to Adrian. She happily accepts, and they have a small wedding ceremony. Shortly after, Adrian shares the joyous news that she is pregnant. Meanwhile, Apollo receives hate mail accusing him of fixing their fight to protect his championship title. This leads him to fixate on the idea of a rematch as the only way to discredit Rocky’s performance. Despite objections from his loved ones about Rocky’s ability to withstand more punishment, Apollo insists that his team do whatever it takes to goad Rocky out of retirement in order for him to rectify the only flaw in his boxing career.
