Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (2016)

Rogue One (2016), an American epic space opera film directed by Gareth Edwards, follows research scientist Galen Erso and his family as they evade Imperial weapons developer Orson Krennic on the planet Lah’mu. Krennic seeks to force Galen to complete the Death Star, a destructive superweapon. During their confrontation, Galen’s wife Lyra is killed and their daughter Jyn escapes with the help of rebel extremist Saw Gerrera. Fifteen years later, cargo pilot Bodhi Rook defects from the Empire and delivers a holographic message from Galen to Gerrera on the desert moon Jedha. Upon learning of Rook’s defection and the Death Star from a source, rebel alliance officer Cassian Andor sets out to free Jyn from an Imperial labor camp and brings her to rebel leaders Bail Organa and Mon Mothma. They convince Jyn to rescue her father so the Alliance can gather intel on the superweapon. However, Cassian has been secretly ordered to aid Jyn while also ensuring that Galen does not survive.

Jyn, Cassian, and K-2SO journey to the moon Jedha, where the Empire is stealing kyber crystals from Jedha City to fuel the Death Star. The rebel fighter Gerrera is leading a rebellion against the Empire there. With help from Chirrut Îmwe and Baze Malbus, Jyn communicates with Gerrera and learns about a secret message from Galen exposing a weakness in the Death Star. The plans for this weakness can be found in an Imperial data bank on Scarif. Meanwhile, on the Death Star, Krennic orders a small test blast that destroys Jedha City. Jyn and her allies rescue Rook and escape from Jedha, while Gerrera stays behind and loses his life in the city’s destruction. Grand Moff Tarkin commends Krennic for this demonstration before using Rook’s betrayal as an excuse to take over control of the project.
