Roman J. Israel, Esq. (2017)

Roman J. Israel, Esq. (2017) is an American legal drama film that follows the journey of a lawyer named Roman J. Israel. Working at a small law firm in Los Angeles, Roman earns $500 weekly and specializes in preparing briefs for clients’ civil rights cases. His partner William Jackson, a renowned professor, handles courtroom appearances while Roman struggles with the social aspect of his job. Despite this challenge, Roman has dedicated years of his life to crafting a brief that he believes will bring change to the unjust use of plea bargaining in the justice system. He may lack social skills, but makes up for it with a remarkable memory and strong personal convictions that have caused strain within his family. Tragically, Jackson passes away from a heart attack, leaving the firm in debt and forced to close its doors. However, Jackson’s former student George Pierce steps in to untangle the firm’s affairs and sees potential in Roman’s legal abilities, offering him a job at his larger firm.
At first, Roman dismisses the offer, assuming that Pierce is just an overly greedy lawyer. It’s not until he meets Maya for a job interview at a local activist network that things begin to shift. The interview doesn’t go well, but Maya still asks him to speak at an upcoming meeting to organize a protest. Despite his struggles finding work elsewhere, Roman eventually gives in and accepts Pierce’s offer. However, he quickly realizes that the new firm might not be the best fit for him after clashing with senior partner Jesse Salinas over a distasteful joke about abused women. Roman then tries to pique Pierce’s interest in his case but is instead assigned to handle clients. One of his clients is Derrell Ellerbee, accused of murder, who offers to provide information on the real perpetrator and testify against him. Without informing Pierce, Roman negotiates with the district attorney for a plea deal.
