Romeo + Juliet (1996)
Romeo + Juliet (1996) was directed, produced, and co-written by Baz Luhrmann. Set in Verona Beach, the story follows two rival business empires: the Capulets and Montagues. The younger generation of these families feel the animosity held by their elders, Fulgencio and Gloria Capulet and Ted and Caroline Montague. Things escalate when a shootout breaks out between Benvolio, Romeo’s cousin from the Montague family, and Tybalt, Juliet’s cousin from the Capulet family, causing chaos in the city. The Chief of Police, Captain Prince intervenes by arresting both Benvolio and Tybalt and reprimanding their families. He warns them that if another such incident occurs, there will be serious consequences–their lives will pay the price for disturbing the peace. Meanwhile, Benvolio learns of a Capulet party happening that evening and convinces Romeo to crash it with him.
Upon hearing that his beloved Rosaline will be attending, Romeo agrees to go along with his friend’s plan. Mercutio, their friend, joined them as they headed to the Capulet mansion. On the way, Romeo took ecstasy and was overwhelmed by its effects at the party. Needing a break, he went to the restroom where he ran into Juliet. The two fell in love instantly without realizing each other’s identity. Unfortunately, Tybalt caught sight of Romeo and was determined to take revenge for his intrusion into their home. However, even after leaving the party, Romeo couldn’t stay away from Juliet and returned to see her. He proposed to her, and she agreed to be betrothed if he sent word the next day. True to his word, Romeo asked Father Laurence to marry them and received his blessing. With the help of Juliet’s nurse, they were soon united in marriage.
