Ron’s Gone Wrong (2021), an animated sci-fi comedy directed by Sarah Smith and Jean-Philippe Vine, with co-director Octavio E. Rodriguez and written by Peter Baynham and Smith, features tech giant Bubble’s latest invention: the B-bot. The brainchild of CEO Marc Wydell, this robot buddy uses an algorithm to help individuals make friends. In Nonsuch, California, middle-schooler Barney Pudowski is the only one in his class without a B-bot. His childhood friends–Savannah Meades, Rich Belcher, Noah, and Ava–have all become consumed by their own B-bots. On Barney’s 12th birthday, his father Graham and grandmother Donka realize he has no friends. Hurriedly visiting a Bubble store, they find it closed for the day and end up purchasing a slightly damaged unit from the delivery driver.
After receiving the B-bot as a belated birthday present, Barney discovers that it is defective and prone to glitches upon activating it. Not wanting to disappoint his father, he decides to return the robot to the Bubble store for repairs. However, while there, he encounters Rich and his friends who mock him relentlessly. Despite this, Barney and the B-bot manage to escape happily together. Unfortunately, Rich calls the authorities and they all end up at the Bubble store where it is decided that the B-bot will be destroyed. Refusing to let go of his new friend, Barney secretly rescues him and gives him a new name – Ron – derived from his model number.
