Rounders (1998) is an American drama film, directed by John Dahl, that delves into the underground world of high-stakes poker. Mike McDermott, a gifted player and law student in New York City, has his sights set on winning the World Series of Poker. However, at an underground Texas hold ’em game run by Russian mobster Teddy ‘KGB’, Mike’s confidence leads to him losing his entire $30,000 bankroll in one hand. Determined to focus on school and keep his promise to his girlfriend Jo, Mike turns down mentor Joey Knish’s offer to stake him and instead takes on a part-time job. But when his friend Worm is released from prison, Mike gets pulled back into the world of poker as Worm’s hustling ways land them both in trouble.

Mike allows Worm to play on his credit at the Chesterfield Club, loaning him $2,000. After winning $10,000 and cashing out, Worm’s debt now stands at a hefty $25,000 owed directly to the dangerous pimp, Grama, who works for KGB. Grama takes the $10,000 that Worm left with from the Chesterfield and demands payment for the remaining amount. As Mike resumes his poker lifestyle with friends, his romantic relationship with Jo comes to an end. Petra informs Mike that Worm has continued to rack up debt in his name, now totaling $7,000 at the Chesterfield. In Atlantic City, Worm confesses to Mike about his debt to Grama but conveniently leaves out that he is working for KGB. Mike attempts to negotiate a weekly payment plan with Grama but is met with ridicule for Worm’s inability to pay off his debt promptly.
