Royal Deceit (1994)
Royal Deceit (1994) is a drama adventure film co-written and directed by Gabriel Axel. Prince Amled witnesses the murders of his father, King Hardvendel of the Danes, and brother, leading him to enter a semi-catatonic state. This saves him from being killed like his family members by Fenge (the king’s brother) and his henchmen. The king and prince’s bodies are brought back to Amled’s distraught mother, Geruth, at their castle. Fenge claims he arrived after the murders and offers support to Geruth as she mourns her loss. He is eventually crowned king and declares Geruth as queen. During the funeral pyres, Amled observes that fire ‘destroys even a great king’.
Despite Amled’s erratic behavior, Fenge begins to question if his actions stem from true insanity or a clever act. His men escort him into the woods where he meets Gunvor, a maiden who joins him intimately. Gunvor admits that she was sent by Fenge to seduce Amled, but she assures him that she will keep his sanity a secret. They continue to secretly see each other. While the majority of their men are away on business, Amled takes matters into his own hands and kills Ribold, Fenge’s right-hand-man. He then reveals to Geruth that he has been in control of his mind all along and exposes Fenge as the killer of their loved ones. Geruth vows to never sleep with her husband again and asks Amled to take action by killing Fenge and claiming the crown for himself.
