Rumble Fish (1983), an American drama directed by Francis Ford Coppola, is based on the novel of the same name by S. E. Hinton. In Tulsa, Oklahoma, Rusty James is the younger brother of ‘The Motorcycle Boy’, a well-known figure among the local gangs who had previously brought peace between them. When the Motorcycle Boy mysteriously disappears for two months, chaos ensues as heroin takes over the streets and Rusty James struggles to maintain his reputation. As he battles a rival gang leader and gains the upper hand, he is suddenly interrupted by the unexpected return of his brother. This distraction leads to Rusty James getting injured, but luckily, his brother comes to his aid and nurses him back to healthю
Throughout these events, Rusty James’s awkward friend Steve serves as a helpful companion for the Motorcycle Boy, although he remains cautious due to rumors of his supposed insanity – which some say runs in their family. The brothers hang out with their destitute, alcoholic father, who comments on the Motorcycle Boy’s resemblance to his mother. Rusty James drops out of school due to a suspension for fighting and cheats on his girlfriend Patty at a gathering hosted by Smokey. After she breaks up with him, Smokey confronts her, leading Rusty James to realize that the party was orchestrated for Smokey to pursue her. Steve and the brothers go out drinking and the Motorcycle Boy mentions how he discovered his mother dating a TV producer during their time in California.
