Rumor Has It... (2005)
Rumor Has It (2005) is an American romantic comedy directed by Rob Reiner. In 1997, Sarah Huttinger, a writer for The New York Times, returns to her hometown of Pasadena, California for her sister Annie’s wedding with her fiancé Jeff Daly. While in town, Sarah confides in her grandmother Katharine Richelieu about her doubts regarding marriage. To Sarah’s surprise, Katharine reveals that Sarah’s mother Jocelyn also had cold feet and ran off to Cabo San Lucas a week before her own wedding. Seeking more information, Sarah seeks out her mother’s old friend Aunt Mitsy who confirms that Jocelyn spent time with Beau Burroughs, a classmate from their prep school days, just before her wedding.
Mitsy also mentions that Beau was close friends with Charles Webb, the author of The Graduate novel. Jeff notes that Sarah’s parents were married shortly before her birth and this leads her to question if Beau is truly her biological father. She also accuses her grandmother of serving as inspiration for the character Mrs. Robinson in The Graduate, who famously wooed and ran away with her daughter’s love interest. Despite these revelations, Sarah decides to head to San Francisco where Beau, now a highly successful Silicon Valley Internet guru, is giving a speech. During their meeting, he confesses to sleeping with both her mother and grandmother but assures Sarah that he cannot be her father due to being sterile from previous testicular trauma during a high school soccer game.
