The film Runaway Bride (1999) directed by Garry Marshall tells the story of Maggie Carpenter, a lively and attractive woman who has endured numerous unsuccessful relationships. She gained local notoriety and the nickname ‘The Runaway Bride’ for leaving three fiancés at the altar on their wedding day. When a man in a bar tells cynical New York columnist Ike Graham about Maggie’s reputation, he writes an unflattering article about her without fact-checking. However, this man turns out to be one of Maggie’s jilted exes and his account is filled with inaccuracies. After Maggie sends a fiery response to the newspaper, Ike loses his job for not verifying his source’s claims. But, there may be a chance for him to redeem himself by writing a truthful and thorough piece on Maggie, even if it means proving that she is not the heartless ‘man-eater’ he portrayed her as.

Ike journeys to Hale, Maryland, where Maggie runs her family’s hardware store and creatively repurposes industrial materials into stylish lamps. Despite her previous attempts at marriage, Maggie is now preparing for her fourth try. Her fiancé-to-be, Bob Kelly, is a high school football coach who loves using sports analogies and has been mentoring Maggie on how to ‘see’ their wedding day. As Ike tags along with Maggie throughout the town, he encounters her acquaintances, relatives, and ex-partners who are all more than happy to share their perspectives. Tired of Ike’s meddling, Maggie offers him the chance to spend quality time together and realize that she is not as terrible as he may think. During this period, both Ike and Maggie form a deeper bond and use each other’s input to better themselves personally.
