Runner Runner (2013)
Directed by Brad Furman and written by Brian Koppelman and David Levien, Runner Runner (2013) is an American crime thriller film. Once a successful Wall Street worker, Richie Furst’s past career prevents him from receiving financial aid at Princeton University. In order to afford his master’s degree, he turns to referring students to online gambling and receives a portion of the profits. When the dean threatens to expel Richie for this behavior, he attempts to win back his tuition using his impressive poker skills but is ultimately cheated out of all his money. Armed with irrefutable statistics, Richie travels to Costa Rica to confront Ivan Block, the mastermind behind the largest online gambling empire in the world. After reviewing the evidence, Ivan discovers that coders have manipulated the software to cheat players. He immediately fires those responsible and offers Richie a lucrative deal: millions of dollars per year to stay in Costa Rica and assist with the website.
Richie initiates a romantic relationship with Rebecca Shafran, who was once involved with Ivan. Richie receives no objections from Ivan as he begins to date her. However, Ivan then uses blackmail against a gaming affiliate who had been unfaithful in order to make him sign with Ivan. This leads to FBI Agent Shavers kidnapping Richie and threatening to destroy his life if he doesn’t help convict Ivan. Despite having no legal authority in Costa Rica, Shavers takes advantage of the situation and uses questionable tactics that would not be allowed for law enforcement in the U.S. According to Ivan, it is inevitable that everyone in their organization will eventually have a run-in with Shavers. As time goes on, it becomes clear that Ivan’s organization does not always operate ethically. For instance, he sends Richie to bribe the Costa Rican gaming director Herrera with an insufficient amount of money, resulting in Richie being physically assaulted.
