Safe (1995)
Safe (1995) is an American psychological horror film written and directed by Todd Haynes and starring Julianne Moore. Carol White is a housewife in an affluent Los Angeles suburb. She fills her days with activities such as gardening, aerobics, and socializing with friends. Despite appearances of stability, her marriage and family life lack passion and her friends keep their distance. After the renovation of her home, Carol begins to experience physical ailments in ordinary situations: uncontrollable coughing from nearby exhaust fumes while driving, difficulty breathing at a baby shower, and a nosebleed during a hair perm at the salon. As her symptoms escalate, she becomes convinced they are caused by exposure to chemicals. Ultimately, she suffers a complete breakdown while at the dry cleaners that has been recently fumigated with pesticides.
Despite attending psychotherapy sessions, Carol’s symptoms remain unalleviated and her community’s indifferent behavior towards her leaves her feeling very alone. Eventually, she comes to terms with the fact that she can no longer function in her current life and decides to start fresh in Wrenwood – a new-age desert community for individuals with environmental illnesses. Led by self-help advocate Peter Dunning, Wrenwood offers Carol a sense of belonging among others who share her health struggles. However, as she claims to be improving, Carol becomes increasingly isolated within the community and develops facial lesions while relying more heavily on breathing apparatus.
