Safe House (2012)
Safe House (2012), an American action thriller directed by Daniel Espinosa and written by David Guggenheim, tells the story of junior CIA officer Matt Weston in Cape Town, South Africa. His role as a ‘housekeeper’ involves maintaining a local CIA safe house for potential operations. Seeking to join his girlfriend Ana in Paris as she starts her residency, Matt contacts his mentor and superior David Barlow to inquire about a station there. However, Barlow dismisses the idea, claiming that Matt lacks the required qualifications. This only adds to Matt’s frustration as he has yet to have a ‘houseguest’ during his year-long stint, depriving him of valuable field experience. Despite this setback, Barlow assures Matt that they will revisit the issue in a few months’ time. In other parts of Cape Town, former CIA spy Tobin Frost, who is now a wanted criminal, obtains a data storage device from MI6 renegade Alec Wade. However, their exchange is interrupted by mercenaries who fatally shoot Wade.
Frost makes an escape and eventually surrenders to the American consulate as his last resort. Under the leadership of seasoned agent Daniel Kiefer, Frost is then transported to Weston’s secure facility for interrogation before being brought back to the US. Tensions rise as Weston observes Kiefer’s team forcefully interrogate Frost with waterboarding techniques. Suddenly, Vargas and his group of mercenaries assault the facility, resulting in the deaths of Kiefer and his colleagues. In a daring move, Weston manages to flee with Frost. He quickly reaches out to Barlow at CIA headquarters in Langley, Virginia along with Catherine Linklater, Kiefer’s superior and the agent in charge of Frost’s questioning, as well as CIA Deputy Director Harlan Whitford who is supervising the whole operation. Linklater instructs Weston to lay low and await further instructions.
