Salt (2010) is an American action thriller film directed by Phillip Noyce and written by Kurt Wimmer. The story follows Evelyn Salt, who finds herself imprisoned in North Korea on suspicion of being a U.S. spy. In an effort to quiet the attention her boyfriend, arachnologist Mike Krause, has drawn to her case, the CIA arranges for a prisoner exchange. Despite Evelyn’s confession of her true identity as a CIA operative, Mike still proposes marriage. Two years later, Evelyn is involved in an interrogation of Russian defector Oleg Vasilyevich Orlov with fellow CIA agents Ted Winter and Darryl Peabody present. Orlov claims that ‘Day X’ will bring about the destruction of the USA through sleeper agents known as ‘KAs’. He also reveals that Agent ‘KA-12’, whose real name is Evelyn Salt, will assassinate Russian President Boris Matveyev at the upcoming funeral of the US vice president.

Upon hearing this information, Peabody orders for Evelyn’s detainment while Orlov manages to escape after killing two agents. However, Evelyn also escapes and attempts to contact her husband while on the run from both the pursuing CIA and police. After being taken captive, Mike remains in the hands of his kidnappers. Salt, on a mission to gather necessary supplies including weapons and a spider in a jar, takes action at the vice president’s funeral by shooting Matveyev. Instead of seeking revenge, she surrenders to Peabody. Sadly, Matveyev does not survive. Salt then flees to a barge where she meets up with Orlov and fellow sleeper agents. In a flashback, memories resurface of her upbringing in the Soviet Union where she and other children were trained and she took on the identity of Evelyn Salt – an American girl who passed away with her parents in a car accident overseas.
