Salvador (1986)
Salvador (1986) is a war drama film, co-written and directed by Oliver Stone. Richard Boyle, a seasoned photojournalist with two decades of experience, has had his fair share of success. However, struggles with substance abuse and an air of arrogance have damaged his reputation and made it hard for him to find work. One day, he discovers that his wife has left him and taken their child. With no money or job prospects, Boyle turns to his friend Doctor Rock, a former radio host also facing unemployment. Together, they decide to venture to El Salvador, where Boyle believes he can freelance during the country’s political upheaval. Upon arrival, he reconnects with a general he met during the Football War.
The two go to discuss the situation at a former school converted into barracks, where Boyle learns that the United States is supplying weapons to the Salvadoran Army. After realizing the impending disaster in El Salvador, Boyle makes the decision to depart. However, he unexpectedly reunites with María, a former love interest, and her two children. Witnessing their struggles compels Boyle to assist them in fleeing the country. Together, they attend a mass led by Archbishop Oscar Romero. Tragically, during the service, the Archbishop is assassinated by members of the far-right ARENA party while the army outside opens fire on those trying to escape. Boyle and Maria narrowly escape.
