Sanctum (2011)
Sanctum (2011), a 3D action-thriller, follows the story of expedition bank-roller Carl Hurley, his girlfriend Victoria ‘Vic’ Elaine, and seventeen-year-old Joshua ‘Josh’ McGuire as they embark on a journey to the Esa’ala Cave in Papua New Guinea. Josh’s father, master diver Frank, has set up a base camp inside the cave where the team has been exploring for weeks. While Josh expresses his frustration towards his father and their differing views on cave exploration, the team prepares to venture into an uncharted section of the system. As Judes explores the new system, she encounters a problem with her air tank hose. This results in her losing use of her air mask, and Frank must buddy breathe with her. However, after a few exchanges, Judes panics and tries to keep the mask on.
Realizing that he will not have enough air to make it back to the team, Frank forcibly removes the mask from Judes. Unfortunately, she drowns and Josh watches helplessly from ‘forward camp’. He immediately blames his father for not being able to save her. After much debate over who is responsible for Judes’ death, Frank reveals that she was already exhausted from having to retrieve extra bailout tanks – a task Josh neglected to do. Meanwhile, above ground, the crew realizes that a massive storm is quickly approaching their location. They try to warn the team below but are unable to do so successfully. Josh suggests returning to the surface and with communication down and an uncertain expedition ahead of them, Frank agrees to let his son leave with another climber before them.
