Santa Claus: The Movie (1985)

In the film Santa Claus: The Movie (1985), directed by Jeannot Szwarc, a woodcutter named Claus and his wife Anya deliver hand-carved toys to the children of their village every Christmas with the help of their reindeer Donner and Blitzen. However, one year they become lost in a blizzard and pass away from the cold. Through a magical turn of events, they are resurrected at the North Pole where they meet a group of elves who have been expecting them. Lead elf Dooley reveals that it was foretold that Claus would come to the North Pole and fulfill his destiny of delivering toys made by the elves to all children around the world. They also learn that like the elves, they will live forever. On Christmas Eve, Claus is dubbed ‘Santa Claus’ by the oldest elf and is told that he must continue delivering toys until every child on Earth has received one.
Donner and Blitzen are among the six other reindeer who consume hay sprinkled with magical powder, allowing them to fly and guide Santa’s sleigh through the sky. As time goes on, the stories and customs surrounding Santa Claus evolve. Eventually, Santa becomes overwhelmed by his endless responsibilities and Anya suggests he find an assistant. Puffy and Patch, two elves, compete for the job. Puffy adheres to traditional methods of toy-making while Patch has innovative ideas for modernizing production. In the end, Patch wins by creating a machine that increases efficiency through automation. However, things take a turn when the machine begins to malfunction and produce subpar toys without Patch’s knowledge. Amidst all this chaos, Santa meets Joe, a homeless orphan boy in New York City whom he takes for a ride in his sleigh and befriends along the way.
