Savages (2012)
Savages (2012) is an American action thriller film directed by Oliver Stone, based on Don Winslow’s novel of the same name. It follows best friends Chon and Ben, marijuana growers in Laguna Beach. After smuggling seeds out of Afghanistan, Chon, a former Navy SEAL, teams up with Ben, a University of California graduate in business and botany. With their unique strain of marijuana gaining popularity, the pair amass wealth while also dedicating time and money to charitable efforts in Africa and Asia. They are also both openly involved with Ophelia Sage. However, their peace is disrupted when they receive a gruesome video from Mexican drug-cartel enforcer Miguel ‘Lado’ Arroyo. In exchange for partnership, he presents an ultimatum during a meeting. Despite Chon and Ben’s offer to relinquish their network and leave the business, the cartel insists on a partnership, valuing their expertise.
Planning to escape the dangerous situation, they make arrangements to spend a year in Indonesia with Ophelia. However, they choose not to disclose their true intentions to her. Seeking guidance, they turn to Dennis Cain, a corrupt DEA agent who is in cahoots with them. Despite being urged by Dennis to join forces with the cartel, Chon and Ben find themselves in a dire situation when Ophelia is kidnapped by Lado’s gang. Receiving a threatening video call from Elena Sánchez – leader of the cartel – they are warned that if they reject the partnership, harm will come upon Ophelia. Seeking hope for a way out of this predicament, they seek counsel from Dennis once again. He shares that Elena is at risk of losing her political connections in Mexico – which would prevent her from expanding into the U.S. Unfortunately, as most of her family has already been lost, he has no leverage against her that could aid their cause.
