The director Steven Spielberg and writer Robert Rodat collaborated on Saving Private Ryan (1998), an epic American war film. During the Normandy invasion on June 6, 1944, the U.S. Army faced heavy losses at Omaha Beach from German artillery and machine gun fire. Amidst the chaos, Captain John H. Miller of the 2nd Ranger Battalion takes charge of a surviving group and strategically infiltrates behind enemy lines for a successful victory. Unfortunately, word reaches the United States Department of War that three out of four Ryan brothers have been killed in action, with James Francis Ryan missing from the 101st Airborne Division. In response, General of the Army George C. Marshall issues an order to locate and send home Ryan in order to spare his family from losing all their sons.

Tasked with recovering Ryan, Miller leads a detachment of soldiers consisting of Mike Horvath, Richard Reiben, Adrian Caparzo, Stanley Mellish, Daniel Jackson, Irwin Wade, and interpreter Timothy Upham. Despite Upham’s lack of combat experience, they track Ryan to Neuville-au-Plain. Unfortunately, during the rescue attempt of a young girl, Caparzo falls victim to a German sniper. This loss weighs heavily on the men as they grow frustrated with risking their lives for just one man. Eventually, they reach James Frederick Ryan only to realize he is not the right person. Seeking refuge in a chapel for the night, Miller opens up to Horvath about his struggles in war. Continuing on their mission, they arrive at a gathering point where they hope to find the 101st Airborne who may have landed off course. Instead, they encounter numerous injured and displaced soldiers.
