Saw II (2005) is a horror movie helmed by director Darren Lynn Bousman and penned by Leigh Whannell and Bousman himself. After waking up in a room with a death mask locking his neck, police informant Michael is given instructions by Billy the Puppet on a nearby screen. Failing to retrieve the key from his eye in time, he meets his demise as the mask closes around his head. At the crime scene, Detective Kerry discovers a message for her ex-partner Detective Eric Matthews. The two team up with Officer Rigg and lead a SWAT team to the factory that produced the lock on Michael’s trap. There, they catch John Kramer, also known as the infamous Jigsaw Killer. On computer screens, they see eight individuals trapped in a house including Amanda (Jigsaw’s only known survivor), Matthews’s son Daniel, and six other victims: Xavier, Jonas, Laura, Addison, Obi, and Gus.
John assures Matthews that following the rules of his own game will lead him to Daniel, even with the presence of a deadly nerve agent in the house. Kerry convinces Matthews to give the tech team time to trace the video signal. During their talk, John reveals that his motivation for these games stems from a past suicide attempt after being diagnosed with cancer. He now values life and wants his victims to do the same. The group is informed via a microcassette recorder about hidden antidotes in various locations, including the safe in their room, with a cryptic clue provided on the tape. Despite a warning note, Gus uses the key on the door and falls victim to a revolver disguised as a peephole.
