Saw III (2006), a horror film by director Darren Lynn Bousman, features a screenplay by Leigh Whannell and a story written by Whannell and James Wan. In the movie, Detective Eric Matthews breaks his foot with a toilet lid to escape after being imprisoned in a bathroom. Six months later, Officer Rigg’s SWAT team discovers another Jigsaw game, where victim Troy had to rip chains from his body to escape a bomb. Upon closer inspection, it is revealed that Jigsaw broke his pattern of giving victims a chance to survive by welding the room’s exit shut. Shortly after, Detective Kerry is taken and wakes up with a harness hooked into her ribs. Despite following the instructions to retrieve a key from a beaker of acid, opening the lock does not save her from the trap’s deadly consequences. In another incident, Dr. Lynn Denlon is abducted from her workplace and brought to John Kramer, who is now bedridden.

His apprentice Amanda places a collar around Lynn’s neck connected to John’s heart rate monitor and filled with five shotgun shells that will detonate if she moves too far or if John dies. Per Amanda’s instructions, Lynn must keep Jeff alive until the completion of his game as another test subject is needed. Jeff, a grieving father consumed with vengeance over the drunk driving death of his son Dylan years ago, is required to face those involved in the case through a series of tests at an abandoned meatpacking plant. During his first test, Jeff discovers Danica, the sole witness to the crash who chose not to testify in court, naked and chained inside the plant’s freezer. She is being sprayed with water from nozzles inside a metal frame to accelerate her hypothermia.
