Scarface (1983)
Scarface (1983) is an American crime drama film, directed by Brian De Palma, written by Oliver Stone, and starring Al Pacino. The movie is a newer version of the 1932 film with the same title, which was based on a novel published in 1930 by Armitage Trail. In 1980, Tony Montana, a Cuban refugee and former convict, arrives in Miami during the Mariel boatlift. He’s sent to a refugee camp alongside his closest friend Manny Ribera, as well as their companions Angel and Chi-Chi. Once released from the camp and given green cards, they are asked by Miami drug lord Frank Lopez to take out one of Fidel Castro’s former top aides in exchange for their legal status. After finding work as dishwashers at a restaurant, Tony realizes he is meant for something greater and becomes dissatisfied with his job.
Frank’s aide Omar Suarez sends them to purchase cocaine from Colombian dealers, but things quickly go awry when Tony and Angel are taken hostage at gunpoint. Thankfully, Manny and Chi-Chi come to their rescue. After eliminating three of the dealers, they hand-deliver the retrieved contraband and cash to Frank, suspecting Omar’s involvement. Tony and Manny join forces with Frank, while Tony develops feelings for his alluring partner’s wife, Elvira. Tony later visits his family, including his younger sister Gina whom he is fiercely protective of. In an attempt at providing a better future for them, he gives his mother $1,000 under the pretext of earning it through ‘political means’. Although she sees through his deception and disowns him in anger, Gina keeps the money.
