Schindler's List (1993)
Schindler’s List (1993) is an epic historical drama film directed and produced by Steven Spielberg and written by Steven Zaillian. The movie is adapted from the 1982 novel Schindler’s Ark by Australian writer Thomas Keneally. Set during World War II in Kraków, Poland, the film depicts the Nazis’ forced relocation of local Polish Jews to the cramped Kraków Ghetto. Oskar Schindler, a Czechoslovakian member of the German Nazi Party, arrives in the city with dreams of riches. He uses bribery to obtain a factory for producing enamelware and hires Itzhak Stern, a Jewish official with connections to both black market traders and Jewish businesspeople. Stern takes care of administrative tasks and helps secure funding for the factory.
As more Jews are forced into concentration camps or killed by the SS, Stern works tirelessly to ensure that as many workers as possible are deemed essential to the German war effort, thus sparing them from persecution. Meanwhile, Schindler remains on good terms with the Nazis and revels in his newfound wealth and status as an industrialist. SS-Untersturmführer Amon Göth arrives in Kraków to oversee construction of the Płaszów concentration camp. Once the camp is ready, he issues orders for the ghetto to be liquidated: two thousand Jews are transported to Płaszów while another two thousand are killed by the SS on the streets. Schindler witnesses this horrific event and is deeply affected.
