In School for Scoundrels (2006), an American comedy film directed by Todd Phillips, Billy Bob Thornton and Jon Heder play characters who face ridicule in their daily lives. For example, Roger, a downtrodden meter reader, dreams of dating his building’s foreign graduate student, Amanda, but lacks self-esteem. To boost his confidence and win her heart, he enrolls in a course taught by Dr. P. Unfortunately, this turns out to be no easy fix as Dr. P and his assistant Lesher constantly bully and humiliate their students with outrageous and unethical methods. One task involves starting a conflict or fight with someone just to prove their fearlessness. Despite the cruelty of these exercises, nobody dares to quit because Dr. P has strict rules – anyone who quits or disobeys will not receive the $5,000 refund promised at the start of the class.
Roger’s classmates caution him that Dr. P is known for taking down students who excel too quickly, as proved by his past actions with a former student. Despite this warning, Roger joins the class and starts to develop a sense of pride. He eventually musters the courage to ask Amanda out, using techniques he learned from the course. Not wanting to be outdone, Dr. P begins competing with Roger for Amanda’s attention. He fabricates a story about being a successful and compassionate widowed surgeon in order to win her over. Amanda, being an animal volunteer, falls for his charm and they start dating. When Roger realizes what is happening, he tries to win Amanda back but his efforts are futile. In a fit of jealousy after a tennis match where Roger triumphs over him, Dr. P enlists the help of their classmates to vandalize Amanda’s apartment and frame Roger as a stalker.
