The American drama film, School Ties (1992), directed by Robert Mandel, follows the story of 17-year-old David Greene. Despite his working class background in Scranton, Pennsylvania, David receives a scholarship to exclusive Massachusetts prep school St. Matthew’s Academy for his senior year due to his impressive grades and football skills. Before arriving at the school, he is involved in a fight with a nearby motorcycle gang who insults him for being Jewish, resulting in a bruised forehead. At St. Matthew’s, he meets his roommate Chris Reese and fellow teammates Rip Van Kelt, Charlie Dillon, Jack Connors and Mack McGivern – all popular students from wealthy families. Here he also becomes familiar with the school’s esteemed honor code system.
However, upon discovering that many of his new peers and faculty have negative and stereotypical views towards Jews, David chooses not to reveal his ethnicity. After gaining popularity and catching the eye of Sally Wheeler, David finds himself at the center of drama. A drunken teacher accidentally reveals his Jewish identity to Charlie after a victorious football game against rival St. Luke’s. Jealous Dillon spreads this news to the rest of the team in the shower room, leading to a heated fight between him and David. As word spreads, David’s background becomes a source of ridicule, causing even Sally and other students to turn against him. Despite support from Reese and another classmate, he is constantly bullied by classmates like Richard ‘McGoo’ Collins and his overprotective roommate Chesty Smith.
