Scott Pilgrim vs. the World (2010)
Based on the graphic novel series by Bryan Lee O’Malley, the romantic action comedy film Scott Pilgrim vs. the World (2010) was co-written, produced, and directed by Edgar Wright. In Toronto, 22-year-old Scott Pilgrim is a bass player for indie garage band Sex Bob-Omb, while also dating high school student Knives Chau. However, his friends in the band, roommate Wallace Wells, and younger sister Stacey Pilgrim disapprove of their relationship. During a chance encounter with Ramona Flowers, an American delivery girl he saw in a dream, Scott becomes infatuated and ends things with Knives to pursue her. But when Sex Bob-Omb competes in a battle of the bands hosted by record executive Gideon Graves – Ramona’s former boyfriend Matthew Patel unexpectedly shows up to attack Scott. In order to date Ramona, Scott must defeat her remaining six evil exes after defeating Patel.
After ending things with Knives, Scott moves on to face the next series of challenges. He quickly takes down the likes of Hollywood actor and skateboarder Lucas Lee, super-powered vegan Todd Ingram, and lesbian ninja Roxy Richter. Along the way, he also comes face to face with his former flame, pop star Envy Adams. However, as tensions rise and frustrations mount, a heated argument about Ramona’s past partners leads to their break up. Despite this setback, Scott and his band Sex Bob-Omb continue to persevere as they defeat Ramona’s fifth and sixth evil exes – twins Kyle and Ken Katayanagi – at the battle of the bands. This earns Scott an extra life but seems to have little effect on Ramona as she appears to rekindle things with her seventh evil ex, Gideon. The band is then offered a record deal by Gideon but when Scott objects, he quits in protest.
