In David Fincher’s Seven (1995), a crime thriller set in an unnamed city consumed by violence and corruption, veteran detective William Somerset is approaching retirement. He is joined by his new partner, the passionate yet quick-tempered detective David Mills, who recently moved to the city with his wife Tracy. On Monday, they are summoned to investigate the death of an obese man who was forcibly overfed until his stomach burst, with the word ‘gluttony’ scrawled on the wall. Somerset finds it too extreme for his final case and requests a different assignment, but is denied. The next day brings another victim, this time marked with the word ‘greed’.

After uncovering signs that point to the sloth victim, Somerset and Mills discover the victim to be a drug dealer and pedophile who has been starved and tied down for a year. Through photographs, the detectives deduce that the murders are connected to the seven deadly sins in Christianity. Tracy extends an invitation to share dinner with Somerset and Mills, which helps ease their animosity towards each other. Later on, Tracy confides in Somerset about her loneliness in the city as she has no other acquaintances there. She expresses her dismay at being pregnant and living in an unsuitable environment for raising a child. Having made a similar choice in the past with his former partner, Somerset empathizes with Tracy’s situation and advises her to inform Mills only if she plans on keeping the baby.
